Why One in Three Cats Ignores Catnip
Catnip works through a scent compound called nepetalactone, which cats pick up through their nose. But research published in BMC Veterinary Research found that roughly one in three domestic cats shows little or no response to it at all. The trait is widely thought to be inherited, so a cat that ignores catnip isn't bored or fussy. It simply can't pick up the signal most cat toys are built around. For that cat, even the best catnip toy is just fabric.

That's exactly who silvervine is for. In a 2017 study published in BMC Veterinary Research, around three in four cats that didn't respond to catnip did respond to silvervine. One thing to know: kittens under about six months often don't react to either scent yet. They'll usually still play with the shape and texture, and the scent response tends to develop as they grow.

Completely normal, and usually a good sign. A cat's scent response tends to fade after 10–15 minutes of intense play, and it needs a rest, often from half an hour to a couple of hours, before the scent feels fresh again. A short, intense wrestle followed by a groom and a nap is what a satisfying hunt looks like. Tip: put the kicker away between sessions rather than leaving it on the floor. Toys that are always out lose their appeal faster.

It can help, and it works best with a little strategy.
